Students awarded Tim Thomsen Leadership Award

This week at the Rotary Club of Sumner, four senior student-athletes received the 2023-24 Tim Thomsen Leadership Award for demonstrating academic excellence, outstanding leadership, character and service, athletic achievement and school involvement.

Bonney Lake High School

  • Nathan K: Nathan has been an exceptional leader in boys basketball and boys track & field. As a varsity starter and captain, he ranked in the top 5 for rebounds and second in field goal percentage. In track, he was the league leader in the 800m, a state qualifier in the 800m and 1600m, and received the Heart of the Panther award. Nathan also participated in cross country. Academically, he maintains a 3.607 GPA with honors classes.
  • Jazmyn S: Jazmyn has been a standout in girls basketball, starting varsity for four years and serving as captain for three. She scored 1,000 points by her junior year, was named MVP of the Pierce County League three times, Athlete of the Year by the Tacoma Athletic Commission, and Player of the Year by the News Tribune for the 2024 All-Area Girls Basketball team. Academically, she excels with a 3.821 GPA and has taken multiple AP and honors classes.

Sumner High School  

  • Cooper M: Cooper is an accomplished student-athlete excelling in both academics and extracurricular activities. He was the team captain and 1st team all South Puget Sound League (SPSL) football player, and a team captain and 2nd team all SPSL basketball player. Additionally, he serves as the ASB president. Cooper has a servant heart, welcoming students every day at the front doors of Sumner High School and can be seen cleaning up the cafeteria after lunch. Cooper maintains a strong GPA of 3.779.
  • Parker P: Parker is a distinguished student known for her service, leadership, and athletic prowess. She is a 2nd team all SPSL volleyball player, team captain, and nominee for all-state volleyball honors. In addition to her volleyball achievements, she is a member of the Spartan tennis team. As the ASB assembly coordinator, she plays a key role in organizing school events. Parker is a constant presence at all Sumner High School events and is a fierce supporter of her peers. Academically, she excels with an impressive GPA of 3.936.

The Tim Thomsen Leadership Award is an annual honor bestowed upon senior athletes who exemplify exceptional leadership, character, and dedication in the spirit of Tim Thomsen. Tim served the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District for over 40 years as a teacher, coach, and district athletic director. He was renowned for his servant heart, passion for character development, and belief in the powerful synergy of athletic and personal excellence. This award seeks to celebrate and maintain his legacy by recognizing student-athletes who embody these ideals.
