Panther Update: 11/14/22
Posted by SBLSD on 11/14/2022
11/14/22
I hope that all of our families were able to find some quality time together this weekend and I hope you were able to fill your personal time buckets. Our Veterans Day assembly was so special. Our students in ASB, Choir, Band, Broadcasting, Culinary Arts. and so many other groups came together to put on a great assembly to honor our Veterans. Dr. Dent and Dr. Ament were present and both were highly impressed by our students and the respect and gratitude they displayed throughout the assembly. If you served or have family members who served in our armed forces, thank you for your service. So much of what we enjoy as citizens is protected by your service.
Congratulations to our Women’s Soccer Team, Men’s Tennis, Golf Team, Cross Country Team, Volleyball Team, Women’s Swim and Dive Team, and our Football team for their amazing seasons. These Panther athletes were an example of POWER on and off the field/court.
Winter Sports Start this week. If your student is interested in any way. I recommend they try out one of our Winter Sports/Activities; Mens and Womens Basketball, Wrestling, Men’s Swim and Dive, Gymnastics, Robotics, FCCLA, Winter Guard, DECA, and so much more.
We will be holding a Lockdown Drill this week. The drill was originally scheduled for last Thursday. However, after the events of Ingram High School we adjusted course and used time to specifically teach what students should do in a Lockdown Situation and to review our “See Something, Say Something” options. There are a number of reasons why our school might go into lockdown, only one of them is an active shooter situation. In a real lockdown, the school and district will share information as soon as we are able to.The primary goal is to keep our students and staff members safe. I want each of you to know that the drill is coming and it is a good opportunity to talk with your students.
As always, remind your students that if they “see something” to “say something.” An easy way to report concerns is through the district’s Report It link or through the BLHS’s Incident Report link found in every teacher’s Google Classroom. We will address every concern and we are committed to keeping BLHS a safe and healthy place for all of our students.

Safety
-
It’s Getting Dark
-
As the days go by, the sun is rising later and setting earlier. This means students are walking to school when there is less visibility.
-
Please drive carefully, keep your eyes out for students walking to school, remind your students to use crosswalks and to be vigilant.
-
Thank you all for helping to keep our Panthers safe.
-
-
Parking Lot
-
Be prepared for long lines for pick-up and drop off. Traffic can be tough so please plan ahead in your transportation plans.
-
Please avoid parking in parking stalls when dropping your student off in the morning. Often the parking stalls are assigned to students. When someone is in their parking space they often get confused and park in another student’s space. It quickly becomes an issue. Thank you for understanding.

Students who miss 10% (or more) of school are at high risk of failing courses and research shows they have a significantly decreased chance of graduating.
-
Please help your students by getting them to school every day!
-
If your student is going to miss school please contact our attendance office at 253-891-5860 within 48 hours of the absence. Late Arrivals must be cleared the same day.
-
Attending a medical appointment (Dr., Dentist, Orthodontist, Ect.) during school hours? Ask them to provide you with a note and your student can turn that in to clear their attendance and to check back in school ** If you are an athlete, in season, a Dr. note is required.

Panther Update: 10/29/22
Posted by SBLSD on 10/29/2022
Panther Families,
I hope that everyone is doing well and I hope that you and your student are having an outstanding year so far. Students and families can feel stress this time of year for a number of reasons; first quarter grades are due next Friday, big tests and projects are due, Fall sports and activities seasons are wrapping up, and that is in addition to other concerns people may have. Check-in with each other. There is a team of people at BLHS who very much care about our Panthers. Please do not hesitate to reach out if there are any concerns in any way.
Some of you may know that there was a physical altercation this past week. In no way shape or form does this type of behavior represent BLHS nor does it reflect the culture that the vast majority of Panthers show on a daily basis. I want every family to know that the BLHS team has structures and systems in place to first prevent events like this from happening and second to respond to these events. However, although systems are in place, there are sometimes when events happen despite these measures. This was one of those times and it was unacceptable. We are reviewing our systems with building and district personnel to prevent any such issues in the future. I want to emphasize that the majority of Panthers in our school are doing amazing things. I also want to emphasize our See Something, Say Something Campaign. If you see something that you think is odd, notice an escalating social media conversation, notice someone that needs support, or anything else of concern, please say something. An easy way to report concerns is through the district’s Report It link or through the BLHS’s Incident Report link found in every teacher’s Google Classroom. We will address every concern and we are committed to keeping BLHS a safe and healthy place for all of our students.

Bonney Lake High School
Wednesday, November 2nd
- Since the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is reporting grades quarterly, you will not receive your student’s report card in the mail prior to Fall Conferences. However, our teachers will have up-to-date grades in Skyward and you can also access student schedules in Skyward. If you are not able to access that information prior to the evening of Fall Conferences, you can get a copy of either or both in our Career and Information Center.
- Teachers will be available to meet with you individually from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Teachers will eat dinner from 4:30 - 5:30 pm and will not be available for conferences. Due to coaching and other obligations, a few teacher's availability may be adjusted. If a teacher is unavailable, they will contact you prior to Fall Conferences with how to connect with them if needed. All other staff are available during the scheduled times.
- You will be able to pick up a staff locator and map of the school as you come into the building. This will help you find teachers’ locations and navigate around the school. Leadership students will be out and about in the building to help direct you where to go.
- Our Counseling team will be available to answer questions downstairs in our Career and Information Center.
- We ask that parents arrive by 7:00 p.m. so we can conclude promptly at 7:30 p.m.

Panther Update: 10/25/22
Posted by SBLSD on 10/25/2022
Panther Families,
Happy Tuesday Panthers. I hope that everyone had a fun, restful, and safe weekend. I want to thank every student, staff member, and community member who came together to make last week’s homecoming celebrations come together. By most measures it was a success. We celebrated our Panther Community, our hard work, and our values. While no event is ever perfect, the efforts that groups of individuals put into making sure that our Panthers and our Community were celebrated were. A huge thank you to Mrs. Hubler and to the Parent Panther Pride (PPP) for organizing our 2nd ever Annual Homecoming Parade. I was told that this year we almost doubled the number of participants. I want to thank ASB for coordinating our Homecoming festivities all week long including; an amazing League Championships send off for our Swim and Tennis Teams, events throughout the week, amazing hallways decorations, an unforgettable assembly, and the largest Homecoming Dance that our school has ever had. I want to thank all of our Staff Members, Coaches, athletes and club members for giving the week everything you had. It’s great to be a Panther!
As I noted last week, the first quarter ends on November 4th. Now is the time to check your student’s grades on Skyward and to reach out to your student’s teachers. These grades will impact Winter sports eligibility. Please do not wait until the last week of the quarter to try to catch up. Our teachers are amazing and we are here to help.

Panther Update: 10/11/22
Posted by SBLSD on 10/11/2022
Panther Families,
I hope that the school year continues to go well for your students and your families. Our students never cease to amaze. While school is still school and all conflict cannot be avoided, the vast majority of our students come to school, take care of each other, study and play hard, and they care about BLHS. I feel lucky to serve them and you as the Principal of our school.
Academics is becoming increasingly rigorous. Our staffulty (teachers, staff members, and faculty) are working tirelessly to help your students find success. Sometimes this can be challenging for our kiddos. I recommend checking your students' grades on Skyward regularly. If you need more support or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers directly. The teachers at BLHS are top notch and they are here to help.
BLHS has a number of exciting events coming up next week as part of our Homecoming Week. During homecoming week we celebrate all of our students, the clubs, activities, and sports that they participate in, and we show our school pride. Please encourage your students to get involved, have fun, and enjoy.

BLHS Open House: 9/20/22
Posted by SBLSD on 9/15/2022
Panther Parents,
Tuesday September 20th is our Bonney Lake High School Open House.
You are all invited to walk through your student's schedule and meet their teachers! We want you to know about all the exciting things happening here at Bonney Lake High. Students are welcome to attend with you, but it is not required.
In an effort to go paperless, we will not be providing copies of schedules at Open House. Here are the ways you can have access to your student's schedule:
- Use Family Access on your smart phone to pull up the schedule.
- Have your student write it down for you to bring.
- We will be asking all students on Monday, during Advisory, to take a screenshot of their schedule and text it to you with a reminder of Open House that evening.
- If it is not possible for you to have access to a schedule via a device (computer/phone), a printed schedule will be available upon request that evening in the Career and Counseling Center.
We will start in our commons promptly at 5:30 with a quick welcome from Principal Clarke. A bell schedule will be used to go through the periods of the day - you will spend 10 minutes in each class including Advisory.
Teachers will share information about their courses, how to stay up-to-date on what's being learned, how to track student progress in each class, communication, and support for students.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday the 20th!

Principal's Message: 9/9/22 (PDF)
Panther Families,
I hope that each of your students had an outstanding first week of school. It was so great to hear our hallways alive with student laughter and banter again. Our goal was for you students to feel cared for and safe while getting the information they need to be successful this year. Please encourage your student to attend a club, activity, and/or a sporting event. Students who are connected to school often have the most success.
If you have not already received a syllabi from your student’s teachers, please keep an eye out for them. There is important information including how to connect with your student, how to get support, and much more. Our teachers are working hard to develop relationships with students and to have the most engaging lessons possible. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher if there are any questions or concerns. I cannot wait for week two. I’m so lucky to be working at this school with our students and alongside our staff members.

2022-23 Back to School Info
Posted by SBLSD on 9/5/2022
Panther Families,
I hope that each of you have enjoyed the last weekend of summer break with your loved ones. The staff members at BLHS are so excited to see each of our students in person again. We have been working hard as a team over this last month to be fully ready for our Panthers as they return to school.
Many of our Panthers have already been hard at work and participated in a number of events including; Panther Cue has been hard at work getting ready to mentor our incoming Freshman Panthers. ASB has been in the building or at camp almost daily this summer. Our BLHS band sounds amazing. Cheer, Drill, Robotics, Fall Sports have all been hard at work for weeks now. More students and families attended the Black and White game than ever before, the atmosphere was amazing. Cheer, Band, and Drill welcomed back our BL Little League from their World Series appearance with a parade at Tunes at Tapps. On Friday, our Seniors kicked off the start of their senior year at Senior Sunrise, BLHS Football beat Tahoma HS in dramatic fashion, and our incoming Freshman had a blast at the Freshman Mixer.
There is a healthy excitement in the air and I cannot wait to see our halls full of students once more.
Below I hope you will find helpful information for our first week back to school.
- 2022-23 BLHS Spirit Gear is officially on sale in the bookkeeper’s office!

Welcome 2022-23 Panthers
Posted by SBLSD on 8/10/2022
Dear Panther Families,
I hope that everyone is having a restful summer and that you have been able to spend quality time with your loved ones. This summer I have been meeting with and working alongside the staff members of Bonney Lake High School and I can share that there is a high level of excitement for the new beginnings that come with the start of the upcoming school year.
Bonney Lake High School is a special place. As with many of the teachers here, I was part of the inaugural staff to open our school in 2005. It is an honor to be back at BLHS and to serve our great community as its Principal. I do not take this role lightly and I look forward to meeting each of you in person throughout the years. I am so excited for this school year and to see our Panthers walking our halls again.
Today I will be sharing information about our school community. Attached you will find the 2022-23 Fall Athletic Clearance Letter , the 22-23 Important Dates and Information page, as well as a letter introducing family and I.
Bonney Lake High School is a values based school. By focusing on our Values for Success (Panther POWER) our students thrive academically, thrive extracurricularly, and most importantly, thrive as individuals. Every person who walks our hallways matters, and we want to make sure that they know without a doubt that everyone they pass genuinely cares about them and about their success.
For those of you who have not been introduced to our Panther POWER Values they are:
-
Perseverance: Persistence in action even when faced with discouragement and obstacles to accomplish our purpose. The act of not giving up, pushing through despite your circumstances –even if you fail initially.
-
Ownership: Our choices! Our school! Our future! Being accountable for my/our actions and the results they bring at all times. Taking responsibility for your efforts, actions, decisions, and owning the positive and negative results.
-
Work Ethic: Sustained internal drive to perform at your personal best. Just get it done! Going beyond basic requirements to reach the highest quality possible. Relentlessly pushing yourself, giving full effort, and not procrastinating until you are done.
-
Engagement: Be here! All in! Have fun! Complete involvement, commitment, and immersion with the task at hand. Brain on! Focusing on your task, participating, creating things, sharing ideas, hands and minds are working.
-
Respect: To see value, worth and appreciation in self and others even if ideas and beliefs are different. Treat people the way you want to be treated and show regard for the property of others. Accepting (not judging) individual differences of opinions, ideas, physical attributes, and showing kindness because we are all equal.
The definitions for our POWER Values may look familiar to you or you may have read them in other communications. The definitions rarely change because our POWER definitions were developed by students and staff members throughout the years. Panther POWER is more than an anachronism, it is at the core of BLHS and it is a big part of what makes our school a special place to be.
I want to draw your attention to a few items that can be helpful for both you and for your student(s):
-
BLHS Is Open For Families Starting Thursday, August 18th:
-
To be as family friendly as possible, we do not have specific check-in days.
-
We are opening our doors to all students and families on Thursday, August 18th and will be open from 7:30am to 3:00pm for all back to school business and needs.
-
Also, for your convenience, most services can be completed online so you may want to check out our website (https://www.sumnersd.org/blhs
) prior to coming to the school. It might save you a trip.
-
-
Stay In The Know About BLHS:
-
Our calendar on our website has additional information on clubs and activities (https://www.sumnersd.org/blhs
) -
Remind 101 – Parents and students are encouraged to sign-up to get text messages about important dates and events for your class. Send the following text to 81010:

-
I plan to continue sending out regular “Panther Update” emails to families. These emails will contain upcoming events and important information.

-
Attendance:
-
Student attendance is a major factor in student learning and success in school.
-
Students who miss 10% (or more) of school are at high risk of failing courses and research shows they have a significantly decreased chance of graduating.
-
Please help your students by getting them to school every day!
-
If your student is going to miss class please contact our attendance office at 253-891-5860 within 48 hours of the absence.
-
-
Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Homework:
-
If your student is taking one or more AP courses, chances are they have summer homework that needs to be completed prior to the start of the school year.
-
If you are struggling with some of the work, please do not worry. You are not alone. These courses are rigorous and are intended to be hard! They will challenge you, but you can and will be successful.
-
Be conscientious of how you schedule your time,so you do not overbook yourself. Remember, if you complete 5 AP courses, you become an AP Scholar and will be recognized at graduation!
-
-
Get Connected To School
-
I want for each and every Panther to genuinely care about their school, feel the accomplishment of persevering through challenges, feel confident in who they are and in their abilities, have fun, and to make friendships that will last a lifetime. Being involved in school is a great way to get started. Students who are involved in some form of extracurricular activity, sport, or club are often more successful in school, report less stress and anxiety, and (most importantly) enjoy their years in school.
-
Please see our school website (https://www.sumnersd.org/blhs
) for more information about clubs, sports, and activities.
-
-
Chromebooks:
-
Chromebooks are a necessary and essential tool for all we do here at BLHS.
-
During the first week of school, all freshmen will turn in their 8th grade chromebook and have it assessed for damages. Then they will be issued a new Chromebook that they will use throughout their time at BLHS.
-
Upperclassmen also have to bring in their Chromebook to be scanned and checked to ensure it is in working condition. Students who do not get their Chromebook scanned will be subject to a fine for the replacement value of the Chromebook.
-
If the Chromebook is not in working condition, we will have it fixed so it is available for your student to use. Unfortunately, the applicable fines will be assessed.
-
I encourage everyone to purchase Digital Device Coverage, which has a 20 percent early enrollment discount until the end of September. You may purchase your coverage online - but it will not take place until your student’s Chromebook is inspected, so please make sure you have the chromebooks inspected even if they had it inspected earlier in the year.
-
FYI – replacement for a new Chromebook runs about $400. Loss or damage of a Chromebook over the summer will only be covered if Assurance Device Coverage was purchased for the 2021-2022 school year.
-
-
Cell Phones and Headphone Policy (SBLSD Board Policy 3245):
-
We know that staying socially connected and being available are important to our students and families. Students are free to use their cell phones before/after school, during passing times, and during lunches.
-
Students are not allowed to use their cell phones and headphones or have them out during class time. The intent for this policy is to help create the best learning environment possible. Universal best practice tells us that cell phones and headphones (earbuds) have a negative and direct impact on student learning. We want to set your student up for success.
-
We have your student’s electronic device needs covered with one to one Chromebooks and technology that often exceeds industry standards at their fingertips in every class. Because of this great access, students will not need to use their cellphones during class time.
-
Sometimes emergencies arise and we are here to help. If you need to contact your student during class time, please call the BLHS Main Office at 253-891-5700 and we can relay messages or have your student come to an office to call you back.
-
I want every single student to enjoy the successes that come with earning their high school diploma. Not only do I want to see every student graduate, but I also want every student to have the skills needed for success in their post-secondary studies, training, or service. Every student deserves to enjoy a happy and healthy life that extends far beyond high school. The exceptional staff members of BLHS are here to serve students in their pursuit of these same goals. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers, counselor, or administrator if you have any questions or if you need any assistance.
These years should be some of the best experiences in a person’s life. My goal is that each Panther makes the most of their time in teal and black, that they walk away with the best memories possible, and that they are ready to take on the world.
Please take time to review the other documents in this mailing for important information regarding dates, activities, and expectations to help you plan for the beginning of the school year.
Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and always give your absolute best effort. It’s good to be a Panther!
Sincerely,
Anthony Clarke

Panther Update: 4/28/22
Posted by SBLSD on 4/28/2022
Below you will find information about this Friday's Lahar Exercise, Summer School options, and Important Dates;
Lahar Exercise - Friday, April 29:
Summer schools ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness, the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is participating in a regional lahar exercise, which is designed to test and improve the ability to evacuate or shelter students and staff in the event of an incoming lahar from Mount Rainier. All the schools on the hill in Bonney Lake* will shelter in place. Our Sumner valley schools will evacuate their buildings.
On the morning of April 29, BLHS students will shelter in place by remaining at school inside their classroom. Shelter in place is a short-term safety procedure intended to protect students and staff from potentially hazardous outside conditions, such as a lahar. As part of the drill, schools will review shelter in place procedures. In the event of a real lahar, school buildings on the hill will become gathering places, taking in students, staff and members of the community. The shelter-in-place drill should last no longer than five minutes.

Panther Update: 1/7/22
Posted by BLHS on 1/7/2022
Wow! This week has been very busy - snow, late start, canceled school, and a large uptick in COVID related absences. However, it has also been fantastic to have students in classes where they picked right up where they left off before break. BLHS is a great place to be!
I am excited to let you all know that we will be able to start the COVID Test To Stay program sometime next week. The district is still finalizing all the details to ensure keeping staff & students safe while being able to reduce time students spend out of school when they have had close contact with an COVID and are not exhibiting symptoms. More information will be coming soon. Here is a link to get more information for Test To Stay.
I want to thank all of you for your flexibility, patience, and understanding this year as we work through this pandemic. I totally understand the stress and issues that arise when your student's bus is late or canceled, your son's teacher is out ill a couple of weeks, your daughter is stuck home quarantining for 10 days when she seems completely healthy, athletic events are changed or canceled, mask wearing and the structure of lunch are not ideal. All of this is very unfortunate. However, we are fortunate not to be limited to distance learning like we were at one point; we get to have in-person school; students are socializing, learning, and are able to participate in a more "normal" high school experience. We are all in this together and together we will continue to make this school year as safe and successful as possible.
The end of the semester is coming up very quickly, just 14 school days away. My own kids used to tell me that their grades were "good" when I asked. I believed them. They were great, responsible kids. However, when I randomly went online to check and I discovered that they were not anything close to good. Very upsetting for me - and them for them! I learned that I needed to check their grades with them at least every other week to give them the parent support, and sometimes structure, to keep their grades up. If you haven not checked your student's grades, please do so now! There is still enough time to rescue a semester grade if need be. I learned the hard way that kids' definition of "good" is different than mine and that I needed to actively stay involved to help support their educational success.
Upcoming Events:
- 1/13: Advanced Placement Overview presentation, designed for freshman and incoming freshman (this year's 8th graders) and their families, 5:30-6:00 in the PAC
- 1/13: Curriculum Showcase, designed for freshman and incoming freshman (this year's 8th graders) and their families, 6:00-7:30 in the Commons
- 1/28: End of 1st semester
- 1/31: No school, teacher grading day
- 2/1: Beginning of 2nd semester

HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum- Parent Curriculum Review Night
Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDs prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is hosting a curriculum night for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students currently enrolled in 8th grade Skills for Life or 9th grade Health classes. Additionally, there will be another opportunity in the spring for families of 6th-12th graders who will study this Health-related content during 2nd semester.
Parent Review Night
December 9, 2021 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Sumner-Bonney Lake School District Administration Building, Board Room
Curriculum will be available for preview. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 8 and 9, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
Parents wishing to exclude their child from the HIV/AIDS curriculum required by our state must preview this curriculum and sign an exclusion form.
Parents of students in other grades will have the opportunity to preview the curriculum in March 2022
- Fall Parent Teacher Conferences are happening tomorrow (Wednesday).

Exciting things are happening at BLHS!
We just finished completing the required state testing - that was postponed from the spring of last year. It was a crazy schedule, but the students handled it amazingly well! Thank you for all your understanding, flexibility, and support as we navigated through. We are back on our "normal" schedule. We also had a successful Senior Career Fair and Parent Night as well as a fire alarm (tripped by vaping - I am not happy about the vaping!) and participated in the statewide Great Shakeout earthquake drill.
Next week promises to be very busy as well. We are entering into fall sports post season play and have numerous sports competing! It is also Homecoming Week with all the normal type activities planned. This includes hall decorating, themed dress up days, our very first Homecoming Parade, and ending the week with a Social / Dance (with pandemic safety restrictions) at Knutson Farm,
Our very first Bonney Lake Homecoming Parade is being organized by an extremely supportive group of parents! I am so excited about this and it is so wonderful to be able to have a parade for our students! It will be on Thursday next week, starting at 4:00 at Lowes and working its way to the BLHS lower parking lot, where we will be able to give our football team a proper send off as they leave to go down to Sunset Stadium. (The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but due to lack of officials, it was rescheduled to Thursday by the league). The Route Map and additional information are attached. All BLHS sports and clubs are invited to participate! I hope to see you all there!
We are getting started with coordinating our Holiday Support (meal and gift assistance) for families this year. Any family who is in need of this support, or wants to donate to help, please contact us! All the information you need is in the attached PDF, Electronic BG & HS - Wish invitation . I also included information below about The Market - our wonderful Bonney Lake Food Bank. Programs like these supported me as I grew up and I hope you reach out if you need some assistance.
Here are some quick dates and announcements to keep you in the loop:
- October 25th-29th, Homecoming Week
- October 26th, Fall Choir Concert @ 7:00pm
- October 30th, Homecoming Social @ Knutson Farm @ 7:00-10:00
- November 1st, Winter Sports Clearance
- Fall Conferences: November 3rd, these will be in-person. 3:00-4:30 and then 5:30-7:30. Teachers will be available first come first serve. Masks & socials distancing are required
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Panther Update: 10/9/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/9/2021
This school year is off to a super fantastic start! It has been an extremely pleasure to be back to a quasi normal. Now is the time where teachers are really starting to dig into the core of their content and students may be feeling the stress attached to that: homework, tests, studying, extracurriculars, and having to be really focused in class. This is a place they have not been since the 2019-20 school year!
As busy as things are, I often need help to make sure I am meeting all my responsibilities - keeping organized, prioritizing the right things, and reaching out for help when needed. I am lucky to have a supportive team around me that does that. Whether they tell you or not, your students need your support and guidance at this moment as well. And as capable as they are, their brains are still developing, and the stress of the day is impacting them. Every student needs a caring adult who will take the time to check in with them. Help them to assess if they are meeting their responsibilities: academic performance, prioritizing, time management, as well as how they are doing mentally & dealing with stress. Sometimes they may not want to have these conversations. Have them anyway. You are their rock and they need you.
There are a few areas where we need your help - parking, late start & early release.
Parking - There are times when parents are here early to drop off or pick up their students or are needing to come into the building. Please use the "visitor" parking spots, do not park in a spot in the parking lot. Students purchase their parking spot, and every spot in the lot has been assigned. Parking - even temporarily - in a spot displaces a student out of their spot which often leads to a chain reaction, upset students, and upset parents (rightly so). It leads to a terrible start to a student's day and disrupts learning.
Late Start - I totally understand that traffic has become a large issue here in Bonney Lake. We have grown and our road systems have not yet caught up. Please plan ahead for traffic so your student can be in class on time. We open the doors at 7:05 and class starts at 7:20. Any student who is not in class at 7:20 is tardy. We implemented our start on time (PAW) program which assigned lunch detentions to tardy students and have had a drastic deduction in 1st period tardies - usually under 20 a day. This is great. However, we have also noticed an increase of students arriving 20 to 50 minutes late with a note asking to be excused for an appointment. Some students may have appointments in the morning which makes them late to school. That is totally understood. However, please don't allow your student to miss most or all of 1st period just to avoid a tardy.
Early Release - Through the pandemic we have become accustomed to being able to make doctor, dentist, and other appointments at any time during the school day. Prior to the pandemic, there was concentrated effort to make all appointments outside of the school day - prioritizing instructional time. Now that we are back in school, we are experiencing an extremely high (4x normal) number of students leaving early. Yesterday - we had over 38 students who needed to be released early from school for appointments. Learning happens in the classroom, so any effort you can make to schedule things outside of the school day will be highly beneficial to your students. If you are in a position where you need to pick up your student early, please send him/her in with a note in the morning to give to the main office. We are then able to get them out of class on time without disrupting the class. Without the morning note, we are in a position where we need to call down to the room to get your student, which disrupts the entire class.
Here are some quick dates and announcements to keep you in the loop:
- October 11th(Monday), Picture Retake Day

These are the days for each required state test.

Panther Update: 10/4/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/4/2021
Welcome to October! It is definitely starting to feel like fall. Students and teachers are getting into the groove and starting into the thick of their course content. Right now is a great time to sit with your student(s) and talk about having a consistent study time and place. It has been a long time since students were in “normal” school, with six classes every day. They may need reminders and some parent created structure around creating good study habits; the habits that will keep them on top of their academics and lead to success.
A couple weeks ago I told you about the Tik Tok Devious Licks Challenge. We had very few incidents of vandalism and I want to thank you all for taking the time to talk to your kids about it. The October Tik Tok Devious Challenge is, “Smack a Staff Member”. This is obviously extremely inappropriate and leads to an unsafe learning environment. Unfortunately, with the teenage brain, it might be looked at as funny, edgy, and cool. It is none of those things and most likely will not end well. Please take a moment and have a discussion with your student(s) about this, and hopefully we will have an incident free month.
School safety is our #1 concern. I want to make sure you all know where you can go to report any issues like bullying, drugs, weapons, etc... This web page allows you to bring us into the loop! Report It.
Here are some quick dates and announcements to keep you in the loop:
- Graduation: June 15th, at ShoWare Center, at 7:00pm
- October 11th or 12th, Picture Retake Day (date will be confirmed later today)
- Fall State Testing: October 12th – 20th (see below)
- October 13th, PSAT – sign up with the bookkeeper
- October 18th, No School, teacher training day
- October 20th, Senior College & Career Fair @ 5:30pm in the Commons (Flier Attached)
- October 20th, Senior Parent Night @ 7:00pm in the PAC
- October 21st, Fall Band Concert @ 7:00pm
- October 25th-29th, Homecoming Week
- October 26th, Fall Choir Concert @ 7:00pm
- October 30th, Homecoming Social (possibly dancing) Location TBA
- November 1st, Winter Sports Clearance
- Fall Conferences: November 3rd, the format (in person or online) has yet to be decided
We have state testing coming up next week. Below you will see our daily/weekly schedule as well as what grade will be testing in what subjects. Students will be tested in their English, math, and science classes. As you can see we have only 3 periods a day. This will impact our PCSC students and where they will test. Running Start, Online Distance Learners, PCSC students, and students not taking a math or science class will be receiving a separate email with locations and specific times of testing.

This is just a quick email to cover two things – Open House and a Tik Tok challenge.
Open House - tomorrow (9/21)!
- Starts promptly at 5:30 in our commons & finished by 7:30
- Bring your student’s schedule: teacher & room for each period. You can get it from Family Access, or have your student write it down for you.
- If you are not able to get your student’s schedule, we can print one for you upon request in the Career and Counseling Center.
- You will walk through your student’s schedule, spending 10 minutes in each class. Students are welcome to come, but are not necessary.
- Masks are required & we ask you do your best to properly social distance.
Here is a link to a PowerPoint with a few more of the evening's details. To view the link you have to be signed in to a school district account.
Devious Licks Challenge – Tik Tok
Some of you may have heard of a recent “devious licks challenge” on the social media app Tik Tok where individuals are encouraging others to steal or damage school property.
Students are stealing things from campus such as soap dispensers, towel dispensers, teachers’ personal property and even exit signs. This is happening nationwide, including at school districts in our region. We have already experienced our first cases of school vandalism last week.
Please talk with your student about the very real consequences of this “challenge” and the negative effects of peer pressure sometimes found on social media. This is a good opportunity to discuss with your student appropriate technology use and being socially responsible. Please emphasize that any theft or vandalism to school property has consequences.
It is especially important now when custodial and other staff across our district are working extra hard to maintain clean, safe and healthy buildings with the increased risks from COVID-19.
Thank you.

We had a fantastic first week of school! Thank you for all the support and patience you have shown as we adjust to having all students back in school. Here are a number of things I want to make sure you know.
- Monday, 9/13, is Picture Day. Order pictures here: https://www.
prepaysystems.com/.../bonney- lake-high-school - Online / Distance Learning Students – come in anytime during school hours before 2:00 to get your picture taken.
- Masks continue to be required to wear at all times when in the building.
- This includes all indoor events (sports, concerts, parent nights)
- Masks will also be required at all outside events with over 500 people.
- We will be making some adjustments to student lunches to help maintain social distancing this week. We are addressing the long food lines and developing more seating. Breakfast and lunch are provided at no cost to all students
- Mondays are late start, with classes starting at 9:05. We will open the doors to the building at 8:35.
- Here is this week’s bell schedule https://www.sumnersd.
org/domain/260 - Open House is Tuesday, 9/21. This is where you can come in and meet your students’ teachers and find out about their courses. Masks will be required and we ask everyone to do their absolute best to maintain proper social distancing. Students are welcome to come, but not required.
We are also working to improve the before and after school traffic. We have met with the district, city officials, rerouted our buses and are looking at other options that may make a difference. There are a few ways you can help:
- Carpool with other students & families
- If you are comfortable, have an off-campus location where you can drop off & pick up your student
- Pull as far forward in the drop off area as you can, which will have cars flowing through quicker
- Delay your pick up by 10 or 15 minutes
- Please be patient! Last week there was a bumper bender in the parking lot due a car trying to hurriedly scurry around another. This compromises the safety of everyone
Lastly, please do NOT drive down the side of the school by the gym. This interferes with the buses and is extremely unsafe for students loading buses. We will be closing the gate by the gym to help prevent this from happening.
Take care and stay safe,
Cris Turner

School starts on Tuesday! It has been a long time coming and the entire staff is extremely excited to have students back in school full time! We are not yet clear of the COVID pandemic, so we are continuing to take every precaution possible to ensure the safety staff and students that we possibly can. We are following the recommendations of the Health Department and safety is our first priority. I understand that there are many different opinions about the Health Department’s recommendations – good, bad, and ugly. However, they are the recommendations that are put forward that we have to follow. I thank you in advance for supporting us in our efforts to follow these recommendations to be able to keep students in school safely. Here are a few precautions you need to be aware of:
- Masks are required at all times inside the building, with the exception of when students are actively eating.
- All medical exceptions to mask wearing need to be approved through the district office.
- We will open the building to let students in at 8:45 on Mondays, and 7:05 Tuesdays through Fridays.
- Late start for teacher collaboration has been moved to Mondays; it used to be on Wednesdays.
- Students will go straight to class upon entering the building.
- Breakfast & Lunches are free to all students.
- Students will be spaced apart in chairs for lunch – just like last year.
- We have hand sanitizer stations throughout the building.
- We will be contact tracing whenever we have any reports of exposure and if your child is identified as a close contact, you will be notified asap.
- At the end of school, students will not be able to loiter around the building. They need to go directly to their after-school club, sport, teacher room for help, or leave the building.
- We have identified waiting areas for students waiting for their bus.
On Tuesday, the first half of the day is for freshmen only to assist them with their transition. All upperclassmen come in the afternoon. The rest of the week, all students attend all day. Here is a link to the first week bell schedule. “Homeroom” on the schedule is with students’ Advisory teacher.
Schedules: We have had to make a few last-minute changes to student schedules. Please check Family Access to see your student’s schedule. Students will also be given a hard copy of their schedule in their Homeroom on the first day of school.
Chromebooks: Freshman and new students will be issued a Chromebook next week. I highly recommend that you pay for Digital Device Coverage just in case your student’s device gets damaged, lost, or stolen. Please read about the details on the district page – link above. If consistent internet is an issue for your student, we do have Hot Spots available. Students need to see their counselor to get signed up.
Directory Information – No Photo List:
Parents and guardians may choose whether their child’s name, photos and other directory information is used in district and school publications (print and electronic), social media, websites, videos or by the news media.
If you would like to opt your child out, complete the Directory Information Withholding Form and return it to your child’s school. Please think carefully before restricting this information as your child’s name and photo cannot be included in yearbooks or be part of classroom, team or club photos.
If you complete the Directory Information Withholding Form, your child’s directory information will also not be disclosed to outside organizations, the military, institutions of higher education or used in any communication that could reach the public or media. Learn more about keeping directory information private
Enjoy the rest of this weekend. Stay safe.
